Stellenbosch University, change yourself first!

On September 21 2010,  13h00, concerned members of the student community of Stellenbosch University populated room 1028 of the GC Cilliers building for a meeting to discuss proposed 12-15% increase in student fees for 2011. Those that are well vested in the science of mathematics informed me that the increase means that one would probably have to pay an additional R 3 000.00 on their tuition fees and an additional R 3 000.00 on residence fees. The meeting was to ‘discuss’ but the ‘untranformed’ management representatives turned it into a meeting to inform the students. All of their presentations both verbal and non verbal (powerpoint presentations) were done in Afrikaans. As such, I thought the increament was only for those that speak in Afrikaans. I am was to discover later that it was indeed for everyone. Brief mention must be made that the SRC did make attempts for translation albeit insufficient devices. We had to rely on the translation of those that understand Afrikaans. The point here is that if the management representatives were transformed, they could have made slides in both Languages as was done by the SRC.

Upon my intervention and that of the colleaque, the Progressive SRC Chairperson, Cde. Jan Greyling came to our rescue and directed that management try to answer questions in English. In demostrating progressive revolutional leadership and to the suprise of many , Cde Jan Grying was able to answer the question asked in Zulu by a colleaque who also felt excluded. In their graphic and figures presentations, management failed dismally in justifying the increase. In fact they exhibited intellectaul laziness by just reaching out to an orthodix method of gaining income (increasing student). They have showed to us that other sources of income is only 3% hence indicating that management is doing little in generating income is indicated by the ‘other sources of income’. If really faced with difficulty, one could never resort to a ‘shock therapy’ situation of effecting pain at the same time but could gradually effecting pain to avoid students and paraents pocket to loose too much blood. I cannot be sure if management sought an intellectual opinion from our financial Academics or they are from ‘we know it all’ orthodox.

I need not  mention the amount of money invested in our ‘believe’ project, there you can draw your own conclusion. Project Hope of changing the world is a wonderful project, but the executioner’s axe (Fee increament) are impediments to this intellectaul emancipation.

At the conference held in Italy, March 23-24 2010, the Rector, Prof. Botman told the world that “we have turned the town of Stellenbosch and sorrounding areas into a living laboratory to pioneer new knowledge and create tangible hope for the less fortunate.” If the Rector is to address the world, we must advise him to remix the speech in Italy to that “We have turned the University of Stellenbosch into a living laboratory to pioneer new knowledge and create further opportunity for the affluent of university and systematically exclude the wretched of the earth.” If we put these state of affairs and our ‘changing the world project’ into perspective, we then realize that it is not really the world we must concentrate but rather concentrate on changing the world. It is devoid of rationality when a high school leaners is aspiring to assume presidecy of the UN National general Assembly in order to punish the unsrupulous market forces that has led to marke failures. We must address our issues first. In order to change the world, we must address issues such as the language policy beacuse the fact of the matter is that Afrikaans is merely spoken in two countries in the the world. We must first have a timeframe and directive on such matters. Its a contradiction in action, betray to a common concious and false conciousness. We must first change ourselves before attempting to change the world.

Having been found guilty of ‘treason and other high crimes’ and to face the executioners’ axe, King Charles I deliver’s his final words in his speech on the scaffold, January 30 1649. He comments “I shall be very little heard of anybody here…Indeed, I could hold my peace very well, if I did not think that holding my peace would make some men think that I did submit to the guilt, as well as to the punishment: but I think it is my duty to God first, and to my country, for to clear myself both as an honest man, and a good King and a good Christian. I shall begin first with my innocency. In troth I think it not very needful for me to insist upon this, for all the world knows that I never did begin a war with the two Houses of Parliament, and I call God to witness, to whom I must shortly make an account, that I never did intend for to incroach upon their privilages, they began upon me, it is the militia they began upon, they confess that the militia was mine, but they thought it fit for to have it from me”. As it is and as it appears, the sentence is already set, we are already condemned,  the decision have already been made and what is left is to deliver a student’s financial execution. As one of the condemned, it is therefore paramount that I offer my last last words even though I shall be very little heard of anyone here.

To start with, I owe the University as I write, I am studying at the mercy of the graceful members of this institution whom without I will be willowing in the mire. Given that background, its a sad thing to face an execution when all you want to get an opportunity to acquire knowledge for the betterment of indifidual lives, societies and Nation. We wait for the response of Management and thereafter a directive as the SRC Chair will deem it fit.

Lets get one thing straight, this University did not become predominantly Afrikaans because because we were all singing Khumbaya! It was built by the APARTHEID governement while our forefathers were being shot like dogs, the language was further used to excluded those that did not speak the language. Your XU example is STUPID and silly and undermines the struggle.

    • Correction: it was built by bullied Dutch settlers to try and empower the Dutch colonists in the Cape from the oppression by the British colonialists. The University later became Afrikaans as it became the de facto language for the settlers in the Cape. Get your facts straight, brother.

      • not quite Baas Jenneman27. I’d say it was the slaves of those Dutch settlers that were sjamboked to layer each and every brick fo this goddamn institution. ponder on that one.

The irony of course being that those slaves probably spoke pretty good Afrikaans: that is where Afrikaans started, with the slaves.

Afrikaans wasn’t used to exclude people at SU. Non-white people were excluded based on race, not on language. Otherwise you would’ve seen loads of coloured kids coming to study at SU. Black people were just as unwelcome on white English campuses as white Afrikaans campuses. UCT was (and by your reasoning therefore still is) as much of an apartheid institution as SU. In fact a lot of Afrikaans used to be spoken (and still is to some extent) at UWC, which used to be a specifically non-white institution.

All languages exclude those who don’t speak it, just like isiXhosa would at my XU example, and just like English does everywhere in South Africa. But this doesn’t mean it excludes anyone based on race.

    I have a question.

Suppose you start a Xhosa university in the Eastern Cape on Monday, called “XU”. Because you’re good at running a university, in ten years it becomes a really big university.

You really like isiXhosa as a language, and have ensured that XU retains a Xhosa character. But, because you don’t want to exclude anyone, you allow non-Xhosa speakers to apply. To further help the non-Xhosa speakers, 50% English is spoken in most of the undergraduate classes. Also, to ensure international excellence, almost all of the postgraduate courses are taught in English. What is more, all non-Xhosa speakers are helped in English by university staff, both inside and outside of class.

Still, the non-Xhosa speakers are dissatisfied. The question now is this: what more must XU do? What more can it do without becoming an English university? Or do you propose that it has no right to be a predominantly Xhosa university, that all universities in South Africa must be predominantly English? Before you answer, bear in mind the following:

    1. By far the most people in the Eastern Cape understand Xhosa, and for most of them it is their home language.
    2. It is possible to receive 100% English tuition at almost all other South African universities.
    3. The costs involved in providing English services and tuition to the minority of students is very high (so by demanding more English, you are in effect raising student fees.)

Okay, now onto something more specific. The meeting.

I’ll agree that it was insensitive of management not to provide their information in English. They could easiliy have made the slides in English. But I can assure you that the quality of the translation services could not have been much worse than management’s English. Also, I don’t see why it was necessary to raise the language objection in the middle of the meeting, and not at the start when there was time to sort it out. What would have been ideal, was if Cde. Jan took the time in the beginning of the meeting to make sure everyone was satisfied.

Also, one isolated incident like this doesn’t mean that the university isn’t doing enough to accommodate non-Afrikaans speakers. If it did any more, it would become more than accommodating non-Afrikaans speakers. It would become embracing English as the predominant language of the university. And I don’t see how it is justifiable to force an institution to do that.

Jan, your ignorance is and lack of respect is appalling. Firstly on the matter of barbaric forefathers, speak for yourself; some of us hold our forefathers in high regard as they are our heroes and heroines. You need to step out of your little comfort zone and face the reality, THIS IS AFRICA!! Check your stats, coloured people are not the majority at this institution, whites are, and increasingly so, English speaking whites. You CLEARLY have no idea what you are talking about, the ANC is FAR from English speaking, it is diverse and like all progressive institutions and organizations that embrace diversity they attempt to go out of their comfort zone (Xhosa, Venda and everything in between)to speak a common language that is understood by all! If the rest of the WORLD can attempt to speak in a language that accommodates the majority of the population (English) then why the hell cant Afrikaans speaking people do the same? There is no new apartheid, it is called economic distribution to correct the injustices of the past, yes BEE is not working as well as it should and no one denies that. But if you can think of a more efficient manner to spread the wealth of the country to the black and coloured people then do let us know, until then, deal with the trial and error until we get it right. Give us (1994-1652) years to do that, and then BEE can stop.
If Stellenbosch was strictly for Afrikaans students or students from the Western Cape, then it would make some sort of sense in a twisted discriminatory way, to have the University cater exclusively for such a population. But the reality is that it is not, so if the University accepts students that do not speak Afrikaans then they best cater for such students! Personally I fell that I am receiving a substandard education at this institution, because once I leave here there is nowhere else in the world that I can use the language in a corporate context, and staying and working in the Western Cape is not an option. Some of us have desires to succeed on a global scale; a lack of English proficiency will not do me any justice in this regard.
You have no idea of how to accommodate anyone else but yourself. THERE ARE 11 OFFICIAL LANGUAGES in our beautiful country, not just English and Afrikaans. No one wants to take away Afrikaans, keep it in your home and wherever else where you do not impose it on other people who have absolutely no desire to learn the language, and to compare Afrikaans to Nelson Mandela is disrespectful. Having 11 Universities that cater for the 11 different language groups individually is not only not feasible but for people like myself with progressive mind, we want to interact with like minded individuals hence promoting diversity of our beautiful rainbow nation.
You need to understand that you are not the only person with a culture, there are at least 20 different cultures in our country and you don’t see anyone else marginalising each other to promote their own culture. We all love our cultures and want to preserve them, but we will not impose our cultures on anyone else that is not interested in being a part of our cultures.

    Peoples, my peoples,

“Change-yourself” Yes; let’s change ourselves but let’s transcend our limited stretch of imagination.

If we all really love our deified Madiba so much; why don’t we follow his example. He could speak atleast isiXhosa, Afrikaans and English. Why should our generation not do the same? Answer: because we’re frickin lazy; suffer from Akrasia (weakness of will) and have a damn plain attitude problem!

Its about time that Afrikaners at the bourgeois Cape follow their fellowmen from Kwazulu Natal and Mpumalanga for example who can all speak isiZulu/siSwati or isiNdebele. It’s about time that Black people start making the effort to learn afrikaans just as their the baSotho comrades are in the Free State or Venda brothers in Limpopo.

Naturally if one person makes the effort to learn another’s language, some form of reciprocity will occur.

To speak Afrikaans does not mean you align yourself with old notions of “Afrikanerdom! or the world of Coconuts and “Umlungu sell-outs.” To speak an Afrikan language doesn’t mean your a “bantu-lover” (read “kaffir-lover” if needed: old-school racists still use this language in their private spheres.

For heavens sake’s people, we are the the Mzansi generation that is meant to be different to those who lived under apartheid. When are we finally going to set a different agenda?

A Ngiyabonga / Nkosi/ Dankie/ Thanks to constructive criticism would surfice to make debate both healthy and welcoming! (read: I am welcoming critique)

Aweah to Critism for the sheer sake of criticism itself! Let truth be spoken to the status quo!

Sandile, are you telling me that you see no coloured Afrikaans speakers in Stellenbosch? I would ask if you’re colourblind, but it seems like such a cheap shot.

Are you really gonna go down this road again? Cause then I’m just going to assume you are Dave Harris from mg.co.za and leave right now.

Oh, and there will be no racist, baby-raping white hegemony in Stellenbosch. I trust you’ll make sure of that. Just kill them all.

    • What he is trying to say (though utterly misses because due to last paragraph) is that the coloured community in Stellenbosch is (1) mainly Afrikaans, (2) pretty disadvantaged in the sense that BEE doesn’t count for them and RDP housing in the Western Cape (their homeland) is going mainly to black Xhosa immigrants from the Eastern Cape even though they were just as fucked during Apartheid and (3) just as in-need of alleviated education costs as all the rest of us.

We all know that coloured in the western cape were not fucked like the blacks were… They were in fact represented in the Tricameral parliament that the apartheid goverment had… i think you guys need to read better and understand wht the one is trying to say and wht the other is not. oh and as for the voting…please i can have a large group of my friends click on the button i want them to click and then get more votes… its just a vote… but we do know that this univerisity is not doing more than enough to accomodate non-Afrikaans speaking people, if anything, they are doing more than enough in “preserving their culture” like other pople dnt have cultures and languages… and you should be ashamed of yourself for even mentioning that UKZN has proposed to have courses in ZULU only, while US stil fails to even accommodate people who are not Afrikaans speaking!!! wow!!1 does that not tell you something about the US!!!!!!???? wake up and stop the propaganda you are perpetuating! im sure if you had said that to an audience of UCT, UP, WITS, UKZN and RU they would have been apalled by your incinuation that US is more inclusive and more hardworkin then them in bettering people, and accommodating them!!
And you really show your true self whn you say people should leave is they are not happy with things… im sorry where have you been living…? in South Africa we know who always leaves whent the going gets tough… please *rolling eyes* you need help… no really you do…

  12. 2) I do have to agree that the University is up to shit. The spend money on all kinds of useless things and thus take away the quality and worth of a degree at the institution.

It disappoints me deeply. I even decided to complete my studies through UNISA.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against you, but I am against the couple of unjustified words you used. I fully understand your problem with the University. I’ve experienced it myself. But that is exactly why I took a stance and let the University know my problems. I even joined a student society there to help solve some of these problems.

The University management need a wakeup call. You are a student, it is your right to wake them up.

  13. 1) To say that Afrikaans is only spoken in two countries is displaying your racial and cultural misinterpretation based on social hatred. Afrikaans is spoken in dozens of countries all over the world. Some other languages (most other official languages of our country) are only spoken in South Africa. Zulu is one of them. And yet there are plans to create Zulu only courses and Zulu only classes at the University of Zululand.

That’s perfect! The demographic of KwaZulu-Natal constitutes a Zulu University! However, the demographic of the region surrounding Stellenbosch is mainly Afrikaans and it would suggest that Afrikaans should be a major proponent of tuition at this institution.

To me it is simple: go study at a university that accommodates your mother tongue. If such a place does not exist, pressure the government, accept that you won’t see such an institution in your time and study at an institution where English is used in the mean time. Never stop pressuring the government to make the right choice. Especially if you know they WILL make the wrong choice if you don’t speak.

BUT FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE, DON’T STRIP A GROUP OF PEOPLE OF THEIR RIGHTS BECAUSE YOU ARE UNINFORMED OR JUST PLAIN MAD. ESPECIALLY IF YOU COME TO THEIR AREA OF DEMOGRAPHIC MAJORITY.

I would never go to Zululand and demand to be taught in Afrikaans, that’s absurd!

O, and get your facts right before making public accusations such as this. Here are some very simple references to disprove your point. If you carefully read through both articles you’ll understand things a bit better.

Chief, you should get your facts right, majority of Afrikaans speakers in the Western Cape are not white, yet you do not see them at Stellenbosch, this has nothing to do with Afrikaans except to perpertuate the white hegemony. And majority of White Afrikaans students here, are not yet from the Cape. Stellenbosch University is not language instituion but an academic instituion. It seems you forget how the favourite apartheid did to african languages in this country. And black students are here to stay, THIS IS MY COUNTRY

      Like

      • I never said the majority is white…have you followed my reference links? There, you’ll clearly see that the Afrikaans coloured population hold the vast majority!

Oh, and my friend, I was born in the Cape, THIS IS MY COUNTRY. Afrikaans students are here to stay as well.

But let’s not start throwing racial rocks at each other like our barbaric forefathers did, that’s silly and we know it doesn’t work.

I am not here to racially discriminate, merely to supply a counter example to yours.

The “new apartheid government” (the racially discriminating ANC members) are in fact doing the same as the stupid old government did, just with English this time…can’t you see that?!?

They believe that if everything is done in English, everyone would be better! Big mistake! If everything is done in mother-tongue, with English as a second language, everyone would be better! Please understand that.

For the time being, we are in this country together, we need to accommodate each other. Understand that taking away an Afrikaans University (especially Stellenbosch) is as great a deed against the Afrikaans population as it is for someone to assassinate Madiba!

Please try and understand the mechanics of the situation at Stellenbosch before just trying to change everything! Not everything Afrikaans has to do with Apartheid, our language is part of our identity, racism is not (well, at least not the proud, Afrikaans South Africans that also happen to be white).

I am just as against the increase in fees as you are, why not battle this giant (the University) together instead of quarreling about silly issues past.

        Amandla ngawethu!
